We make Portland awesome: Mama Jean's Kind Threads

"We make Portland awesome" is a weekly series. I’m interested building our community of artists by helping us all find out more about each other.
This week: Mama Jean's Kind Threads

Who are you?
I'm a woman with an old soul and a young heart and I love creating with fabrics. Watching bits and pieces become a quilt and a work of art... nothing like it.

What do you make?
At present, I am focusing on building my niche in Quilts featuring Day of the Dead, Skulls, Skeletons and Pirates and also, art images turned into quilts or original works of art quilted.

Besides making things, what do you do?
I am a full time artist and I try to live life to the fullest. I strive to deeply love my family and friends, care about people and the world around me profoundly and laugh as often as I can. To try and see the beauty of each day and to never take it for granted and to always try and give back to the world just a bit of the magic I have been so blessed by.

What inspires you?
Life inspires me I think. Goodness in others, people who live passionately in all they do. Kindness to strangers from strangers. Our world is an amazing canvas that is painted new and fresh each and every moment.

Where can your work be found?
My work at present can be found on ETSY, at Mama Jean's Kind Threads on Facebook, at Trillium Artisans and at http://www.mamajeanskindthreads.com/

What do you love about Portland?
Portland is an incredible city and I am thrilled to be apart of a city that strives to accept all types of people, that cares about the environment. I love the neighborhoods and the diversity found in them. I love riding my bike everywhere and having bike lanes and roads to get me there. I love the artist communities. I love that when you say the word recycle people don't ask you what that means they become excited about the newest way they have found to recycle or a new place that does. And believe it or not, I love the rain!

A belated report on the biggest event of the year

The Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale 2011 was a huge success! Over 14,000 people came through the Convention Center during the two days that the event was happening. So much handmade goodness in one place and so many fantastic friendly people.
